A 29-year-old woman from Great Kills carrying Xanax and oxycodone stole $2,000 worth of jewelry from a shop near Atlantic City, according to police.Marilyn A. Mazzella, of Holly Avenue, was charged by Galloway Township Police with shoplifting, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when Ms. Mazzella entered The Smithville Jeweler and asked to look at necklaces and bracelets, according to the arresting police officer and the store owner."I handed her two chains to look at, and she bolted out the door," the store owner told the Advance, noting that Ms. Mazzella was "nicely dressed."
Ms. Mazzella drove away but was apparently not familiar with the territory -- police intercepted her after she turned around her Mitsubishi on a dead-end street near a bay. She was pulled over near the scene of the crime on Route 9, the arresting officer, Gary Brenner said.A stainless steel and acrylic stainless steel necklaces composed of two branching forms each with a central void. The owner of the store identified Ms. Mazzella as the suspect, and the missing jewelry had been hidden inside her dress, Brenner said.
A pat-down search revealed the Xanax and oxycodone. A charge of resisting arrest was tacked on because she spun around as she was placed in handcuffs and kicked Brenner, the officer said.
Brenner noted the scourge of prescription drug abuse on Galloway Township, located on the mainland about 13 miles northwest of Atlantic City. "It seems a lot of the thefts that we're seeing are done by pill abusers and CDS (controlled dangerous substance) abusers looking to make some extra cash,Wholesale stainless steel pendants and steel jewelry line with bold new designs." he said. "We see it a lot with the abuse of pills. We deal with various stainless steel jewelry and stainless steel rings."
The owner of the jewelry store, who declined to be identified by name, did not express anger toward Ms. Mazzella, and doesn't want to see her sent to jail: "I'd like to that young woman get some help," she said.Leonard Joseph Cardinal, 34, was sentenced Thursday in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey. He pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault and robbery.
On May 5, 2011, Cardinal participated in the daytime robbery of Golden Tree Jewellers at Willowbrook Shopping Centre in Langley by jumping over the counter at the store, jostling an employee and stealing watches from a display case before fleeing. Six other men were also involved in the crime. The robbery was a serious one indeed, said Judge Richard Miller. The potential for tragedy was very much present.
Cardinal was arrested and sent to North Fraser Pretrial Centre to await trial. There, he was placed in a cell next to gangster Jesse John Margison. Margison was in custody in connection with an allegedly gang-related kidnapping in VancoCardinal claimed that he had heard through the jail rumour mill that Margison was going to attack him, so he launched a pre-emptive strike. The judge, however, was not convinced.
Miller pointed to phone conversations Cardinal had with an unidentified friend before and after the attack and said Cardinal never mentioned a threat or said he was going after Margison to protect himself.
Instead, Cardinal told the friend that Margison was a punk and that he had called him a goof, a serious insult in jail. He left the phone off the hook so his friend could hear the beating and laughed about it afterwards.uver in November 2011.
On Aug. 12, 2012, Cardinal went into Margisons cell, where he was alone, and attacked him. A guard heard the commotion and arrived a few seconds later to see Margison unconscious on the floor and Cardinal stomping on Margisons head.
The guard ordered Cardinal to the ground, but he did not comply and the guard pepper-sprayed him. When Cardinal was under control, the guard heard Margison gasping for breath and saw a pool of blood around his head. When paramedics arrived 15 minutes later, Margison was not breathing but he had a pulse.
Instead of showcasing the Aurora Lux collection on a traditional fashion show runway, the Regina-based company decided to use the IMAX theatre to present the line of sci-fi-inspired jewelry.
Im really excited to do something different, said designer Rachel Mielke, who founded Hillberg and Berk in 2007, and has watched it grow into a multi-million-dollar, internationally recognized business that currently employs a dozen people.
Mielke described the video as a really cool, artsy, fun, ski-fi. screen play that showcases the jewelry. In addition to the video screenings, the launch featured a live runway component, with models from the video walking through the theatre, sporting sci-fi hair and makeup, wearing Aurora Lux jewelry designs.
The Aurora Lux collection includes everything from winter pastels to winter brights. Gold is back. And gold and silver are mixed together in numerous pieces, reflecting the trend to mix metals.Prices range from $55 for a simple pair of gemstone earrings to $745 for a luxurious, gold and crystal quartz, multi-functional necklace
The majority of the pieces in this collection are under $400, Mielke said. So its investment jewelry, but its still affordable.Every season, Hillberg and Berk picks a new face of their collection. Its not just a model; its a real woman with an amazing story to tell. And we tell that story through our look book, Mielke explained.
The face of the Aurora Lux collection is New York Times best-selling author Gayle Lemmon, who wrote The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, an empowering story of how Afghan women worked in underground businesses to support their community and provide for their families after the Taliban took over power.
